Sewards End Village Website

Sewards End extends along the Walden Road, two miles east of Saffron Walden. The village is about a mile long on the B1053. It is 43 miles from London, 17 from Cambridge and 14 from Bishops Stortford. Audley End railway station is 4.5 miles away. Some of the village dates back to the 11th century. Today Sewards End has about 190 houses and about 140 children. The village has an active WI, Horticultural society, youth club, mothers and toddlers, and carpet bowls. A library van visits the village every Monday evening. There is an annual open gardens day in the summer, an annual flower and vegetable show, and St James Church holds services every two weeks. Most years we also hold a village fete.

A village history was written in 2000 and republished in 2009. Copies can be obtained from Tracy Coston  (Tel: 01223 894462).

The Parish Council was set up in 2004.

Petition re: objections to Planning Appeal to build 233 houses between Sewards End and Tesco

Click here for the appeal statement

Dear Sewards End Residents,

Many of you will be aware that the developers have submitted an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate in their bid to build 233 dwellings between Sewards End and Tesco - effectively joining the village to the town.  The appeal will be heard at a public inquiry in September.

The Parish Council and the Town Council have submitted their formal objections to the proposal.

In addition, Hazel Mack and I have also submitted our objections, which are also those of others who live in the village - a copy of our statement is attached.

Over the next 2-3 weeks we will be gathering signatures on a petition in support of our objections, so please don't be surprised if you have a knock on the door from one of us, or our group of helpers - our aim is to record as many signatures as possible so that the Inspectorate is in no doubt about the strength of feeling locally.  Anyone from the age of 16 can sign the petition.   There is no pressure at all to sign it of course, but we hope that you feel able to do so.

Best wishes,

Kathleen Hutchinson
